The Future of Southern California Goods Movement: Will We Survive or Thrive in 2025?

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are projected to more than double in growth of containerized goods by 2025 to 25 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The point/counterpoint question that will be addressed is "Are we ready or not ready to accommodate the projected growth?"
To set the stage, the forum will open with a video featuring two fictitious and extreme alternatives. The video has been developed by CSULB's Advanced Media Productions Center and the CITT Policy & Steering Committee. One scenario describes how the Southern California goods movement industry learned from the past and how stakeholders came together to plan for growth while improving quality of life. The other scenario presents a world where the region has lost discretionary cargo to the detriment of the local economy and quality of life.
The program will continue with a panel discussion on which alternative future is likely to occur. Jeannie Beckett, Principal at The Beckett Group, represents industry and also has the viewpoint outside the local area. Mortimer Downey, Senior Advisor at Parsons Brinckerhoff, represents a national policy perspective and will share examples of successes and failures from other states and regions. Gill V. Hicks, Senior Associate and Director of Southern California Operations at Cambridge Systematics, brings to the table his expertise in collaboration and in port and trade issues. Serving as moderator and overseeing the audience question and answer session is Dr. Genevieve Giuliano, Senior Associate Dean, School of Policy, Planning and Development, University of Southern California. |

In this forum, scholars and industry experts discussed the Panama Canal's expansion, offered their unique perspective, and challenged existing assumptions about implication for west coast ports, jobs, and cargo volume. There was a formal feedback from an industry commentator before the floor was opened to the audience for Q&A.
